Amanda McKinney
(Steele Shadows Rising)
Publication date: March 19th, 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
From bestselling and multi-award-winning author Amanda McKinney comes a **standalone** romance in the bestselling Steele Shadows series.
A man who cheated death.
A woman hired to pick up the broken pieces.
And an obsession strong enough to kill for.
They told him he’d been given a second chance at life. Told him to count his lucky stars, to stop and smell the roses. Kind of hard to do when your body is bound by chains and cuffs. That’s what it felt like, anyway, when Phoenix Steele woke up from his coma to a life full of restrictions. Once known around town as the fearless, indomitable heir to the Steele fortune, the former Marine was suddenly labeled unstable, short-tempered, and loose cannon. Unwilling to accept his issues, Phoenix instantly clashes with his assertive therapist—the town’s most eligible bachelorette.
No one knew overcoming the odds like Dr. Rose Floris. Determined not to be a statistic, Rose lived her life under carefully constructed routines—until a gruesome murder and a series of mysterious events reveal she’s become the center of a madman’s obsession. Suddenly, Rose’s world is turned upside down and she finds herself under the watchful eye of her new client, a broken man she’s been warned not to trust.
As the tables begin to turn on their client-patient relationship, Phoenix realizes he must battle his own demons before he can save anyone, including the woman who’s become his own obsession…
An obsession he’d kill for.

EXCERPT:

After taking a quick second to review my new patient’s file, I stepped into my office—and stopped dead in my tracks. The dark silhouette faced the window, sitting in my chair. His back was to me, his feet kicked up on the windowsill as if he owned the place.
The first thing I noticed was the size of his feet, two dirty cowboy boots crossed at the ankles, a trail of mud running down the wall. I literally cringed. He had brown, shaggy hair that looked like it hadn’t seen a pair of scissors in months, and a neck as thick as a tree trunk. A tattoo peeked out of the collar of a black leather jacket stretched over the widest shoulders I’d ever seen.
Although he had to have heard the door open, the man didn’t move. Yep, my new patient, whom I’d never met, had made himself right at home behind my desk in my office chair. Had he gone through my stuff? Pilfered through my space? My mind began spinning with all the confidential information he could have read on my desk. Totally unacceptable, and totally inappropriate.
Little did I know what kind of inappropriate this man had in store for me.
“Thanks for showing up.” The faceless voice was jarringly low. The man was pissed. At me.
“Excuse me?”
He kicked his boots off the window, plopping them onto the floor with a thud, leaving enough mud to fill the Grand Canyon. Another cringe.
“You’re late,” he said, still not gracing me with the front part of his body.
I blinked. No way. This was not happening. Who did this guy think he was? I bit the inside of my cheek and squared my shoulders. Professional, professional, you need this job, be professional, I reminded myself.
“I apologize, Mr…” I glanced at the name typed on the file in my hands. “Steele.”
“Phoenix.”
The chair swiveled and a flutter of butterflies rippled through me.
And I thought the voice was jarring…
His eyes were the color of a tropical ocean, a baby blue, almost iridescent, if not for the heat that spilled from them. The lines of his face were sharp with defined angles, a mirror to the disinterest he wore like a beacon, blinking brightly, making sure I knew he didn’t care to be there. Days of unkempt scruff covered his clenched jawline, pulling my attention to a pair of lips that had me licking my own. Circles shaded his puffy eyes with wrinkles at the edges suggesting he was a good decade older than me, possibly pushing forty. A grey T-shirt fit snuggly under that leather jacket, defining a pair of pecs I could only assume were as hard as the expression he was pinning me with. I felt my weight to my tiptoes, like a magnet being pulled, assessing him with a frowned expression that I knew was giving me away. Because under all that weather-beaten, overtly masculine appearance, narrowed eyes, and locked jaw, there was a strikingly handsome man. Hidden, almost as if on purpose.
I’d never seen an aura before, but the man vibrated the air around him in a hostile, dark cloud-like an animal warning of its presence. I could actually feel him in my office.
A Mighty King.
Fallen.

Happy Release Day to DOWN TO FALL (Love Happens #5) | by Jodi Watters!! #NewRelease #Steamy #ContemporaryRomance #BookReview #Excerpt #GiveMeBooks

Title: Down to Fall
Series: Love Happens #5
Author: Jodi Watters
Genre: Steamy Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 20, 2020

Blurb

A lust story. Only meant to be temporary.
A love story. Always meant to be permanent.
A hate story. Never meant to be.
This... is all three.

Nicole
It started in an elevator in California. Our lust story.
You know, the kind you know going in is a bad idea, but... the nagging desire and all. A few drinks in the hotel bar across from our workplace. A few nights in a luxury suite twenty floors above. What could it hurt?
Innocent fun would be had by all, and I’d walk away a well-satisfied woman. Ready to continue my life of brokenhearted loneliness.

Grady
It started on a ridge in Afghanistan. Our love story.
You know, the kind you felt in your soul at first sight, but... the tragic circumstances and all. Intentionally casual conversation over Irish whiskey. Intentionally casual sex over the course of two weeks. How could I refuse?
Guilt-ridden bonds would be built, and I’d confess my darkest sin. Beg for forgiveness five years overdue and clean my conscience along with it.

It started with the cold hard truth. Our hate story.
You know, the kind that could end a surprisingly beautiful beginning.

My Review

I'm sitting her flabbergasted, trying to figure out what to say that will make some coherent sense to you.  I am simply blown away by this book.

Once I started reading it I just could not stop. After reading the blurb, I thought I knew what to expect.  Boy was I ever wrong.  This story has outstanding, three-dimensional characters who take you on the ride of your life.  This is one of the most creatively written books I believe I have ever read...and that's saying a lot.  It's hot, it's a heartbreaker, it's the highest of highs and lowest of lows. It's one of a kind. While part of a series, it stands on its own.  I cannot wait for the next book!

5 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Excerpt

Ten minutes after he agreed, Nicole found herself standing inside a deluxe suite at the Hyatt, their tryst beginning in the lap of luxury.
It would end here too, but only after she’d had her fill of him and/or thirteen days had passed, whichever came first. Based on the way that gray t-shirt stretched across his broad shoulders, and if there were tattoos and tan lines under it, she’d run out of time before she ran out of desire.
Backing her up against the hotel room door, Grady leaned in but didn’t touch her, only locking the deadbolt and flipping the security bar, the sound loud in the hushed darkness of the room.
“You sure about this?” His masculinity surrounded her, warm and wicked. His height dwarfed her, tall and tantalizing.
“Yes,” she whispered. “Are you?”
“No,” he choked out, his voice gravelly. “No, I’m not sure. But there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
They’d never been this close before, but if she’d known his strength was so powerful, his scent so heady, his size so commanding, she’d have cornered him weeks ago. Probably humped his camo-panted leg like a dog in heat.
Well, he’d better be ready. She was about to be unleashed. Which was to say, he’d be on the receiving end of her largely limited—and significantly rusty—sexual repertoire.
Comparing herself to the animalistic dynamo that was a female canine in heat was her ego talking. Oh, she could get the job done, no doubt about it, but Grady might not be so impressed he’d hire her again if you caught her drift.
Thirteen days might turn into a one-and-done situation.
But luckily, she’d made that quick drugstore run during her lunch break yesterday, so she was fully prepared. Condoms, a Lady Bic razor and shaving gel, and a king-sized Kit Kat bar completed her purchase. The condoms were a necessity—safety first, ’cause that’s how ole Nicole rolled. The razor because, between the two of them, he should be the only one with stubble. The chocolate was simply because she hadn’t had sex in a longer timespan than your average bad-credit car loan, and that fact would make any girl self-medicate.
Thankfully she’d had the foresight to buy a half dozen candy bars and wasn’t ashamed to admit she’d powered one down just prior to stalking him via the elevator tonight.
Chocolate might give her cellulite, but it also gave her courage. Courage she desperately needed, because right about now, she was feeling like a born-again virgin.
Unsure. Unsteady. And unprepared for the sight he was about to bestow upon her.
Bare, muscled skin.
Their suite was several stories high, the only glow in the room from the small lamp on the nightstand and that of a thousand twinkling lights from the surrounding downtown buildings. The panoramic floor to ceiling windows offered an amazing view, day or night, and though the drapes were drawn open to the outside world, they were cocooned inside by the soft radiance of a single bulb.
The only people on earth.
Moving deeper into the room, his eyes barely left hers as he tugged his t-shirt off, lazily dropping it to the floor.
My god.
There were tattoos. Plural. And in nearly the exact location of her fantasies.
The letter F was inked over his left pec muscle, a single initial monogrammed in an Old English decorative script. F for Foster. Underneath that same glorious pec muscle was a short verse, in a cleaner, simpler font, that wrapped horizontally around his torso toward his back.
It was too dark in the room for her to read the words, but that task was now on the tippy top of her To-Do list.
What she could read was the larger quote tattooed along the right side of his collar bone. De oppresso liber. To liberate the oppressed. The motto of the United States Army Special Forces.
Don’t ask her how she knew that. It wasn’t a fun tale to tell.
“What’s going through that pretty head of yours?”
Swallowing, she regained the use of language. “That I wanna lick your tattoos.”
A smart-ass grin graced his beautifully sculpted mouth. “Damn. Should’ve tattooed my dick.”
The button on his pants popped, the slide of his zipper letting loose a hoard of butterflies in her stomach when he opened the placket. Dark shadows hid his best asset, his intention only to relieve the pressure, not release the beast.
He needn’t worry. She wanted to lick that too.

My love for steamy romance began when I was in junior high. A friend and I noticed a dumpster of discarded paperbacks behind our local dime store. Covers missing and each book split down the spine, I scanned the pages for any love or lust words—and curse words, too. From that point on, I scoured the public library and the paperback racks at every store, reading anything labeled romance. I said a tearfully grateful goodbye to Judy Bloom, and Jackie Collins began ruling my world.

I live with my high school sweetheart husband in the desert Southwest. Awesome in the winter, not so much in the summer.

My life long goals are to think before I speak, smile more and swear less, and actually weigh what my driver's license states I do.

My Review

Once I started reading, I could not put this book down!  Grace has a true gift with SciFi Hotties and she used it here to the max!  Hot and steamy, action-packed and twisty, you'd better put on your seatbelt.  Tons of emotions are seen and felt along the way as Mikki, Surnen, and Trax work out their pasts and insecurities to build a strong trio.  The feelings all feel so real that it is easy to identify with them all.  And Mikki's surfer chick past brought a unique spin I was not anticipating.

These books are a true escape where I am transported light-years away.  This was my first so now I have to catch up!!  I'm in love with Grace Goodwin's writing and The Interstellar Brides Program!

Blame it on the drugs…

Ever since that night Cupcake had promised Allen, she’d help him, she regretted making him that promise. She’d also started to have a sense that something was basically wrong with Allen. She couldn’t believe he summoned her to meet him at this place.

A cloud of Chanel perfume floated on the air just as a woman walked up to Cupcake and placed her hand on her arm. “Welcome to my home,” she said, in a syrupy country drawl.

It took an effort to conceal the shock of seeing Devine Corea. She was the daughter of a famous local sweet-talking criminal, Stanley Core, who was nicknamed “Stan, the main man,” her father had a reputation on the Southside of Chicago. The story went that her father had discovered that he had mistakenly sweet-talked the fifteen-year-old virgin daughter of a brothel into bed with him? The girl had only been in the brothel to pick up the cash receipts. When she failed to bring them back to her father. He had sent out a searcher for her who had discovered the girl in bed with Stanley Corea. In that heated moment, Stanley was persuaded to marry Devine’s mother. Now standing in front of Cupcake was the offspring of that union.

Cupcake considered the woman standing in front of her. She knew her well. Devine was territorial. She ruled the Southside of Chicago when it came to gambling, prostitution and doing favors for powerful people. Devine was famous for taking care of private matters. One thing about the women who worked for Devine. They were all considered a class act, and all were over eighteen. It was said you couldn’t work for Devine if you couldn’t produce your birth certificate to prove your age. Cupcake was glad she wasn’t into that career choice. Lap dancing and stripping but she wasn’t into selling her ass. She cleared her throat thankful for her career choices and said. “Hi, Devine. I’m supposed to meet Allen here.”

Devine’s face lit up with an evil, conniving grin. “Yes, I know. When I heard, you were at the front door, I had to come to greet you personally, Cupcake. I’d love to have you come dance for my guest, someday, soon.”

Devine’s house wasn’t home, but a nightclub slashed drug-den, slashed house of prostitution. Anything you wanted could be brought there. If you had the money.

Book Review

Gut-wrenching, raw and emotional, I ADORED this book!  Of course, I like them dark and twisty and dark and twisty this was.  I have not read Jackson or Luca's books so finding out about Nikki and Hurt to Love was like getting a fabulous gift wrapped up in bright, shiny paper ~ exciting to open and wonderful to read.

Cillian and 'Wednesday' were the primary characters and both so full of emotion and beautifully described.  I loved Cill's sense of humor as it made everything better and the growth they both went through was amazing.  This was a book that showed healing, hope and true, true love.  I am so grateful that I got to read it.
